New South Dade Assistant Principal Leroy Axem

New assistant principal Leroy Axem joins Buc Nation from Booker T. Washington High School. An experienced teacher and administrator, Mr. Axem became an educator after playing Division I football at West Virginia University.

What was your first impression of South Dade?

I thought it was very beautiful. Coming in and meeting new people feels like a breath of fresh air. I can’t wait to meet all the students now.

What is your background in the classroom?

My first job was at North Miami Elementary, and I was a PE teacher.

What made you want to switch from being a teacher to being an administrator?

Growing up, I always wanted to be the best at what I do. After teaching for so long and seeing how students could benefit from me, I wanted to move to an administrative role so they could benefit even more.

What role did your athletics play in your academics?

Playing football growing up brought me a lot of discipline. Even when something is not going in your favor at school, my self-motivation and self-discipline taught me that I couldn’t quit.

What is something about yourself you want others to know?

I love my family. My family is always #1. I love my three kids to death. Everything I do is to teach them the ropes of their own self-discipline.
